Are We Destined to Repeat The Past……

Ok…I know…the past does not exist! But for some…it does, if only because they cannot let it go and in some cases ( probably most) they do not even know it!

As long as we are open to change, we are not condemned to repeat the past! What do we need to change? We need to change our way of thinking about our past and the way we react to our past. We need to be willing to be honest with ourselves, honest enough to look in the mirror and really see *US* YOU….the real YOU as others see you. Once we can be honest with ourselves about who we are and where we are headed…… that is the first step to changing our future.

You know what they say about repeating the past??….. According to George Santayana~ “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”  I am not so sure that I agree with Mr.Santayana, I think that it is really important for us to purge our past so that we can move on. Here comes the changing our way of thinking part.….I believe that some of the past plays a huge roll in stopping us from realizing our goals and dreams, no disrespect to Mr. Santayana but I want to disagree with him on this, at least in part….meaning that there are probably some great memories from our past that we are happy to keep in our head/heart that do us no harm, as a matter of fact they can warm a soul on a cold winter night. Then there are some past memories that surface in the form of unforgiveness and grudges…… represented by huge walls and baggage that keep us buried down inside our past so deep, that we cannot get out from under it long enough to enjoy the now let alone the future.

And speaking of the now…..isn’t the now what is really important here anyway? I mean… is what is going to help to create the future! So isn’t it the now that we should be concerned with? And if we have walls and baggage that we are carrying around with us that are keeping us from realizing our goals and dreams, stuff that was created by past experiences……then is it not time to address those issues? After all….it is the past that we are trying not to repeat here. If we do not deal with the issues caused by our past….then I can almost guarantee we are going to be in a very similar situation same time next year!

It is time to look in the mirror and get real with ourselves! Once and for all…..what do we see when we look in the mirror? Do we like it? If not then let’s get down to answering the question of why not! Then move straight into forgiveness! Lets start with forgiveness for ourselves, then move on to forgiveness of others. If you are carrying around issues….. anger, shame, guilt…….WHY is it there in the first place? Where did it come from? Did it just materialize out of thin air? No! It comes from a past experience…right? Ok…so… not hang onto and remember the past experience that have caused these issues…purge them…let them go!!  Give them over to God and let Him deal with it!

First step…..admit it…second step….forgive…..Yeah..there may be a lot of forgiveness ahead of you, but it is important to get through this! Because this is what is going to let you forget the bad past experiences and start to form a future that is full of all your goals and dreams!

Blessings to you!

  1. Interesting, to start….but, I had to stop reading it for a couple reasons. There was a massively long run-on sentence in the 2nd or 3rd paragraph, that I had to keep going back to read. And, secondly, the black background with the white font hurt my eyes. Perhaps I will come back to read it later. Thank you for the insight.

    • Hi Kelly!
First, thank you for visiting my blog! I appreciate all feedback!
I have always battled the problem of writing the way I speak! As you can tell from that description…..I am a tad long winded! One of my writing teachers told me that if she had to read the way I wrote….she would DIE for lack of breath! Ha!
Editing is not my strong point! I do try to go back several times to re read and edit. Thank you for pointing out the run on sentences. Fortunately I do not advertise my blog too much at this point, still growing, so not a lot of traffic to see my mistakes!! Room to learn.
As far as the background color! Well, I have been wondering myself about that and am so grateful that you gave me the feedback! I loved the way it looked and thought it went well with the subject. I recently have been thinking about changing due to readability. So…I changed it to the only other option, white. It is easier to read, but now it seems boring. Oh well! LOL

Hope you visit again! Please feel free to critique! I appreciate that you were kind about it! 🙂
